Travel Photography - What to Take in your Kit?:
When traveling, what should you take in your photography bag?
Following on from his earlier article on what lenses to take with you, Darren answers that question quite comprehensively.
There are a couple of points I'd like to add:
Tripod: You can get mini tripods that are small enough to slip into the side pocket of your camera bag, and can be found really cheaply in most camera shops or on ebay. I tend to have one with me all the time. With little rubber feet it's safe to put on the roof or bonnet of your car without scratching it, or you can put it on almost anything to help you stabilize for that low-light shot. If you can, make sure before you buy that it will be stable enough with your DSLR + the lenses you use most often. The smaller ones can be a little lacking in that department.
You might also consider a small beanbag - a little more cumbersome to carry around than a mini-tripod, but can have other uses. The one I use is actually marketed as a 'wheat bag'; In your downtime, you can heat it up in the microwave for a couple of minutes, and put it on those aches and pains you tend to collect while traveling. Handy!
Memory cards: On my last overseas trip, we used a pair of iPods and a memory card reader (from belkin) that plugged into them. Very very handy. Why a pair of them? Mostly, because we had two with us, and this way, we had redundant backup. Can you tell I was traveling with fellow geeks?
Power Adapter: What we do, is pack a 4 port multi-board, and a single power adapter for the area(s) we're going into. That way, we plug the multi-board into the adapter, and can charge/power more than one thing at a time, which can be a (not literal) life-saver.
Oh, and like Darren, we also take a point-and-shoot. Slips into a pocket, and goes everywhere with us, unlike the DSLRs.
