Trying to Find My Photograph by Jim Gehrz

A nice inspirational piece - it's good to know that even long time pros struggle to find the photographic equivalent of a writers voice.

Your Photo should be one that speaks to you as well as speaking about your vision to others. Every photo contains something of the person taking it, but the really good ones help you to get a hint of the feeling attached to the moment, the situation, the context.

This is where I think photography has an edge over videography - photography leaves more room for the imagination to come into play, where there's less shown, more can be imagined; must be imagined. When the viewer gets involved in the scene in such a way, there's more emotional impact.

I was counseled to head towards videography rather than photography by a current professional photographer - I've chosen to ignore that counsel. Photography feels more like where I want to be, and I think I can say a lot more as a photographer than I could as a videographer - it's a matter of finding the feeling, and recording the scene in such a way that your audience gets a hint of that feeling.

That's the skill. That's what I'm trying to find.
