Ever since color photography became the norm most people have considered Black and white photography a thing of the past.
However for those photographers who consider photography an art form the use of black and white images flourished. Now, using your digital camera, and/or a computer graphics program, you can easily give it a try.
Check out this short video about digital black and white photography:
I think that black and white photographs can sometimes better convey the drama in a scene by eliminating the distracting effect that color can sometimes have.
Many times the color itself rather than the subject becomes the focal point and that's not really what we want to achieve.
Using a digital camera allows you to start with color and then convert to B&W at home with your computer and graphics program.
You can also start with B&W with those digital cameras that have the option. The experts feel though that it's best to take the picture in color to capture all 3 channels, or primary colors, which provides a wider ranging gray scale.
Here's the above picture in its original color form before being converted using a simple, free graphics program.
Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you'll find a picture somewhere.

I am a big fan of b&w photography. I believe getting a great shot that shows the correct shadows and light is an art form and fun to experiment with.
