Posting photos to the Web has its merits, but it has its demerits, too. One of them is unauthorized use of your images once you float them in cyberspace. To protect their intellectual property online, some photographers watermark their photos with software like AiS Watermark Pictures Protector ($29.95) from Watermarker.com. The program will create transparent, as well as embossed, watermarks for your photos and emulate transparency on black-and-white images. It will also create photo galleries for the Net that disable the right button on a mouse so a photo can't be copied or saved from a computer's display.

I’ve never been really fond of the idea of watermarking photos, especially my own.
I understand it from a business perspective, but watermarking just looks so…. tacky. Tasteful watermarks are sadly, few and far between.
