Thomas Hawk's Digital Connection: Photographing Architecture is Not a Crime, Thomas Hawk vs. Building Security Episode 118:

Thomas hawk is a keen photographer of architecture - and he's forever getting harrassed/hassled by building security, claiming that he isn't allowed to stand in a public space, and take a photo.

If you've done much photography at all in a public space, you'll have encountered the same thing.

To my mind, the important points are:

  • Know your rights where you are.

  • Be polite. Firm if you have to, but polite.

  • Don't be afraid to ask for the name of the person doing the harassing, if they're claiming to do so on behalf of someone else.

  • If you feel physically threatened, don't be afraid to back down - for your own safety. However, I'd make a point of following up with the building/location owners at a later time.
