Monitor Calibration and Profiling
If you're only ever going to display your photos on the web, then monitor calibration probably isn't amazingly important - close enough is close enough. However, if you plan to progress to having your works of photographic art professionally printed, then if you want the image you get on paper to look like the image on your screen, you'd better start caring.
Unfortunately, calibrating isn't quite as simple as anyone would like. I've had a couple of attempts at it on my powerbook, but I'm still not happy with the results. Perhaps it's time to pull out some Big guns.
More to follow, as I figure these things out.
