As much as us photographers hate to admit it, mobile phones are becoming an often used camera, and as such, a lot of money is plowed into trying to make them as good as possible. However, this tends to end up in a "megapixel race", with companies working to make their sensor capable of more megapixels than the competiton; this is worthless, as megapixels don't mean a great deal unless you print at high resolution.
Take for example the 8MP rating of my trusty Cannon 350D; it's not massive, and many "point and shoot" cameras have higher, heck, even some phone cameras match it, but the DSLR will always provide the better picture, due to more customization, and just generally a better developed all round package.
As such, I find it laughable that Samsung and Sony are pushing over 10megapixels with their latest sensors….why? Develop the quality it shoots at, it's ability to deal with light conditions, the like, before you go on a mad megapixel rush.
