Here's an interesting concept, try your hand at manipulating someone else's digital photo, and then compare your results with those of others.
I think this is an assignment that can really stimulate one's creative juices. Instead of comparing different, manipulated photos for the purpose of gaining ideas, you get to see what someone else would do with the same photo.
This can lead to a whole new way of looking at any picture, primarily your own, and realizing that there is more than one way to manipulate it.
Anyway, since it's digital and Internet based it costs nothing to try so head over to this website and try your hand at a digital manipulation of the above photo and see what others come up with.
Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you'll find a picture somewhere.
