Advances in digital camera technology are happening so fast and so frequently that I think it's impossible to have the "latest" camera for more than a few months before the next generation comes along.
That's quite a change from years ago when 35mm SLRs were all the rage and new models were introduced at the dizzying pace of about every year and a half to two years.
In those days Nikon and Canon were the leaders, and until brands like Pentax and Minolta started being sold in America and the rest of the world, they competed furiously for the pro and amateur markets.
Well, Canon and Nikon still compete with each other, and against the rest of the many brands out there, and the latest round brings us a beauty of a Canon prosumer model, the G10.
The Canon G10 is certainly one loaded digital camera with its 14.7 mega pixel digital sensor, optical image stabilizer, and 5X, 28MM zoom lens.
I really like these "in-between" "prosumer" digital cameras because you get most of what an expensive DSLR provides, except the interchangeable lens feature, at a third the cost of even an entry level DSLR.
Here's a current review of the Canon G10 digital camera.
Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you'll find a picture somewhere.

I totally agree with you when you say these new in-between (consumer and prosumer)models are becoming more and more attractive. I could see myself carrying this when I wasn’t actually being paid to shoot, and didn’t want to lug around a 5D.

Absolutlly, the best compact camera I ever seen. I bought one in Atlanta, this month and dit about 150 pictures. I am very, very impressed!
I own a Nikon D300. From now, the G10 will be my backup camera.
