You don't need to spend thousands on pro gear to get pro results. All you need is attention to detail, and a willingness to experiment. Or, if you're lazy like me, you can read the results of the experimentation done by others, and work from that...
1000 Watt worklights from Sears, some cheapish 'endless' background paper, and a few home-made stands and supports and stuff. Excellent!
