Software

Media Chance is a Web site chock full of tools for fiddling with photos when you release them from your digital camera into the wilds of your computer. A recent addition to the site is a free program called Digital Camera Enhancer (DCE). The software can help you improve images that may be underexposed or showing signs of "noise." It can do things like correct midtones, improve color saturation and soften skin tones. The features in DCE are a very small subset of its bigger commercial brother DCE Auto Enhance, which analyzes EXIF data for a photo as a basis for correcting it. DCE Auto Enhance costs $39, but you can take it for a 30-day trial run for free.
