FLASHLESS INDOOR DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Summer might seem like a funny time to touch on the subject of indoor photography, but many vacation spots include once in a lifetime opportunities for creative photographs of building interiors.

Many times, when traveling by car to a destination without worthy indoor subjects, there are places of interest along the way that merit a stop, and usually these are old buildings with interesting indoor architecture.

Since the subject is the building interior, and not a person or small object, flash is out unless you happen to be carrying a set of commercial floodlights. Besides, what you want to do is capture the drama of the construction, usually old, and flash is not the way to accomplish this.

This may not be your cup of tea for those of you with an artistic bent you'll be surprised at just how many opportunities there are for "darker" scenes.

I took today's picture a few months ago at The Rampart Casino in Las Vegas, and while it is a modern structure, the use of "available" light makes the passageway appear to be something out of old Europe, which incidentally, is what that casino is supposed to mimic.

Unfortunately I didn't notice that distracting modern tripod with an advertising card on it but the lighting is good, IMHO, and that's what I want to emphasize.

So while it may not make for a good artistic shot it would be a decent documentary shot of part of a somewhat romantic hotel interior for purposes of reminiscing.

I used my humble Pentaxlinks RS430, hand held, for the shot with the ISO set to 100, but as you'll read in this article, by a pro photographer, a tripod is highly recommended for such shots.

Again, because you're using a digital camera and only pay for what you print, you can take quite a few pictures to insure that you have a good one. The judicious use of post processing at home can touch up any shots that are a bit dark or lack proper color balance.

Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you'll find a picture somewhere.
