My rule of thumb is 'if in doubt, go closer' ('go' can mean 'zoom', by the way).
Getting (or zooming) closer to your subject creates a more intimate photo, brings out more detail, and makes it far easier to exclude distracting background details.
Of course, you can duplicate this sort of effect in your digital darkroom
, by cropping the photo, but make sure you've got plenty of pixels to spare!
