Digital Exploration and Lensbaby
Filed in archive Lens by Andrew Garrett on March 12, 2006
One of the benefits of digital photography is that it allows more relaxed experimentation, without the budgetary constraints of film photography. Just yesterday, a friend was telling me how he was getting familiar with the shutter lag on his new camera, by taking photos of people's legs as they walked past him, trying to get them in a certain position - a practice that he found very useful in terms of building his familiarity with his camera, but that would have been prohibitively expensive were he using film.
Another great of example of the sort of exploration that digital allows is the Lensbaby lens
, which produces a very very narrow depth of field. While frequently compared to the effect you get from using a tilt-shift lens, lensbaby lenses create a very different type of depth of field.
If you're looking for more examples, you can search on lensbabies on Flickr, or you can go to the Lensbaby site directly. At the Lensbaby site, you can buy the lenses as well - with a variety of different mounts available.
It's on my wishlist! I wonder if I can arrange a review model...
