DIGITAL CAMERA FIRMWARE UPGRADES

Source:www.files.xboxic.com

Does your digital camera have the latest firmware installed?

Do you know what firmware is and why it's important to have the latest version installed in your camera and other digital devices?

Here's the definition of firmware, as presented on the Kodak website:

"Firmware is data or programs that are permanently written to the read-only memory (ROM) on a device (camera, printer dock, photo printer, etc.). The firmware holds code, which runs user programs."

Shortly after I got my Kodak P880 digital camera Kodak released updated firmware that greatly increased the camera's performance. I downloaded and installed the new version, and was rewarded with the camera's shutter lag being decreased by about 50%, and auto focus was quicker and more accurate.

Updating your camera's firmware, if updates are available, is quick and easy, and well worth the few minutes it takes. For some camera's the upgrade can be the equivalent of buying a new, better performing model.

All digital camera manufacturers provide these free updates, when necessary, with detailed instructions on the process.

This is the page on the Kodak website where I obtained my update, and I offer it as an example of a typical firmware update.

Here's the link to my posting about online digital camera manuals.
The links to the digital camera manufacturers in the posting will give you a place to start to search for the page with possible firmware downloads for your particular camera.

  • not every time. the same works with computers. the problem with cameras – if the break, they break. with computers it’s much more modularized and a lesser risk to ruin everything.

  • I’d say “do not try this at home” unless you really know what you’re doing. I’ve broke a HP R 707 trying to update the firmware.

  • good article!
