Needless to say, the lens constitutes the most important part of any and all cameras, and it always will.
As important as the rest of a digital camera may be, including the sensor, processor, etc. the entire photographic process starts with the lens.
Light reflected by the item you want to photograph passes through the lens, and is "processed" by the various elements that make up the lens.
The quality of the lens' design, as well as the quality of the glass and the care with which it is built, is what makes the difference between a so-so lens and one that is spectacular.
Here's a great website that has tons of useful and timely information on choosing lenses for your digital camera.
Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you'll find a picture somewhere.
