Checking out photo printers

Scott Elder at Slate wrote a good piece last week about photo printers. He chose six printers under $150, put them through their paces and ranked them on a scale of zero to 40. Here are some highlights from his findings.

  • Panasonic KX-PX2M ($99.99). Elder gave this dye-sublimation printer a score of 14. "[W]hen I called Panasonic customer service to ask if this printer could connect to a Mac, no one knew about Panasonic photo printers," he writes. "Don't buy this printer."
  • HP Photosmart A526 ($99.99). This inkjet printer earned a score of 19. Elder's take on this hardware: "HP may be a trusted brand, but its photo printer can't hang with the competition."
  • Canon Selphy CP740 ($99.99). With a score of 24, this inkjet printer was in the middle of the pack, but Elder turned a thumbs down on it. "I'm a Canon guy," he confesses. "I own a Canon camera and a Canon scanner, and my film camera was a Canon. My photo printer, however, will not be a Canon."
  • Sony Picture Station DPP-FP70 ($149.99). Elder gave this dye-sublimation offering a score of 30. He liked some of its features but opines, "at $150, you can get more for less money."
  • Kodak Easyshare G610 Printer Dock ($99.95)
  • "It may have taken Kodak a few years to reinvent itself for the digital age, but this printer proves it has caught up with the competition," Elder scribbles. He gave this dye-sublimation printer a 31.
  • Epson PictureMate Dash PM 260 ($99.99, photo above). With a 37, this inkjet topped the competition. Raves Elder: "I've said some nice things about the other contenders, but forget about them: Buy this printer."
