Candid Photography Tips

Some of my favourite photographs have been candids. Even some of my more formal portraits have a certain candid feel about them since I try to engage with the subject, or get them engaging with each other (particularly for couples). This makes people's faces more animated, it introduces a certain candor into the image. Often, it can create a lively photo out of something that would otherwise be Dull
and boring - a classic portrait.
Children in particular, if you can get them talking with you, be a friendly face rather than the scary man (or woman) behind that big flashy thing, then they'll start showing some real personality.
Truly candid photos, particularly of strangers, introduce a certain amount of legal complexity into the situation. If you're just taking photos for your own personal use, you're probably fine, however if you're considering selling them, be sure you're aware of the laws on such things where you are.
Above all, be polite. If someone asks you not to take a photo of them, or in some way indicates that your photography of them is unwelcome, obey their wishes.
It's just good manners, right?
