Rob Galbraith DPI: Beneath the waves with the Nikon D2X:
"... using the power of white balance adjustment in RAW conversion to change his fish portraits. These shots have historically been done with ultra wide-angle lenses such as the full-frame fisheyes, using flash, from only a foot or two away from the fish. The short roundtrip through the seawater keeps the light from the flash from going too blue, which preserves both color and contrast. But the necessity of shooting this way has meant that "underwater photographers were always stuck with the same perspective"
Back in my teenage years, I spent a lot of time in, on, or near the ocean - yet somehow, I've never learned to dive. Reading this article has really given me some food for thought about how I want to be spending my leisure time, and how I can combine that with other interests - particularly, in this case, photography.
Underwater photography, much like any other niche that requires specialist equipment, I guess, is a way you can really set yourself apart from the casual point-and-clickers and make a distinctive name for yourself in your field.
