About me

Good morning/afternoon/evening, and welcome.
So, this is a new site. What's it all about?
In short, Digital Photography. This includes cameras, software (photoshop in particular, but other software that's relevant as well), reviews, tutorials, sites of interest, lenses, accessories, anything that I think is interesting enough (and sufficiently on-topic) to justify talking about.
Hi, I'm Andrew, and I'm your host here at Digital Shot.
Right now, I work in IT.
I'm planning to change all that.
I've long had a love of photography. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time finding out out how cameras worked, and taking the best photos I could - unfortunately, back then, photography was a very expensive hobby once you allowed for decent film, and processing costs, so I couldn't afford to take as many photos as I would have liked, but I learned the basics well. While at University, I spent about 3 years as the staff photographer for the student newspaper. One summer (I'm in the Southern Hemisphere, so Christmas falls about mid-summer), I worked taking Santa photos, in a mall. However, over time, I stopped taking photos - the cost was too high, and my life had other priorities.
Then digital photography hit the affordable end of the market.
In 1998 I bought my first digital camera, and it's still going strong now (although no longer in my hands). Early in 2005 I bought my first digital SLR (a Nikon
D70), and since then have been taking a lot more photos than I ever thought affordable.
I'm loving it.
As I said: Right now, I work in IT. My plan is to work my way up to being a full time professional photographer by mid 2007, and this weblog is an integral part of that. Writing for here spurs me on to find out new things, new tutorials, tips, techniques, and about the tools I'll be using. My photography has always been pretty simple, now it's getting more complex - I need to care about DPI, RGB colour spaces, EXIF preservation and RAW/NEF/DNG conversion as well as f-stops, focal length and ISO ratings.
I'm also a fan of technology and the web in general - so some of the content here will be about the overlaps of these things, but the focus (heh) will always be on photography. What's what we're here for, after all. Right?
