All good sense suggestions. The one addition I'd make is to item 6 - if you shoot RAW, and you use Adobe software for post-process, then you can save as .DNG with the RAW embedded. Sure it makes your files a bit larger, but you have both the closed standard (your RAW data), and the DNG (Digital negative) Adobe/Open standard to fall back on.
Anyhow, disk space is cheaper every day...
